Dear Houston ISD Parent/Guardian,

As we embark on the latter half of our current school year, we are already preparing for an enriching summer session. Summer School 2024 presents a fantastic opportunity for us to continue supporting our students' learning journeys and upholding our commitment to educational excellence in Houston ISD. We are reaching out to you to share key information on Summer School 2024.

This year, Summer School session will take place June 17 through July 19, Monday-Friday. We will hold district holidays on June 19th, July 4, and July 5 during this session to observe Juneteenth and the Fourth of July.

In supporting our mission to significantly narrow achievement gaps and prepare all students for Year 2035 workplace and world, we are revising who we extend opportunities to summer learning to. This year as in years past we will require Summer School for students not meeting promotion standards for attendance and not earning a 70 or above in core subject area courses. Additionally, we will continue offering Summer School to all our Pre-K and Kindergarten Emergent Bilingual students to strengthen their foundational content knowledge and language skills. However, this school year, we will also offer Summer School to students who score significantly below grade level or do not meet expected academic achievement growth on the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) exam. Lastly, we will also allow families to opt-in to attendance for any other K-5 students, as there is space available.

Summer School offers a valuable opportunity for students providing targeted support to enhance their academic skills and ensure a sturdier foundation for future success. By participating in Summer School, your child can gain confidence, bridge learning gaps, and thrive academically, setting them on a path towards achievement in the upcoming school year.

Additional information on Summer School, including if your student is required or recommended to attend summer school, will be sent out to all parents from district administrators in early April.

Sincerely,

Academics Office
